This event is one of the most significant betrayals in the series' history. By eliminating and replacing the council before Ichigo Kurosaki arrived to rescue Rukia Kuchiki, Aizen ensured there would be no immediate judicial authority to review or overturn Rukia's execution order. It forced Captain-Commander Yamamoto and the Gotei 13 into a reactive position, scrambling to maintain order without their legislative head while Ichigo fought his way through Soul Society rather than being immediately arrested upon arrival.

The chambers of the Central 46 were silent, not in peace, but in absence. Where voices once debated the fate of souls, only dust motes danced in the shafts of light piercing through high windows. The guards stood motionless outside the heavy doors, their minds clouded by an illusion that told them all was well inside. They did not hear the sharp intake of breath or the final silence that fell over the room. When the command to open the doors finally came hours later, the hall was empty save for the lingering scent of reiatsu and a truth too heavy for the Seireitei to bear immediately.

The assassination occurs shortly before the Soul Society arc begins in the narrative timeline. Aizen utilizes his Zanpakuto's power to trick the council's protectors into lowering their guard, allowing him and his accomplices to enter the secure chambers undetected. Once inside, the entire membership is eliminated swiftly. This act removes the highest legal authority from Soul Society just as chaos begins with Ichigo Kurosaki's intrusion. Without the Central 46, no formal judgment can be passed on Aizen or the intruder immediately, creating confusion among the Gotei 13. The truth of the massacre is not revealed until much later during the Arrancar arc. When Ichigo confronts Aizen in Soul Society, Aizen admits to the crime as part of his grand scheme to destabilize the government and challenge the order of the world.
