In Hueco Mundo, the hierarchy of hollows is defined by their ability to consume souls and evolve. A Menos Grande, specifically a Gillian, represents the lowest tier of the Great Hollows. They are formed when numerous hollows engage in a cannibalistic feeding frenzy that merges them into massive entities. While they serve as standard foot soldiers, a rare Gillian may develop a personality from one of its component hollows. This emergence of self causes it to shrink and evolve into an animalistic Adjuchas. To prevent regressing back to a Gillian, an Adjuchas is normally compelled to feed on other hollows. However, if an Adjuchas loses a chunk of itself to another Adjuchas, it can permanently remain in that form. The ultimate goal for many is to become the semi-humanoid Vasto Lorde, though their numbers are very few and they pose an existential threat to Soul Society.

They are the result of the desperate struggle for survival where hollows consume one another. While most remain mindless giants serving as cannon fodder, the potential for evolution drives the ecosystem. The story of the Menos is one of loss and transformation; they begin as faceless masses but can occasionally break free to become Adjuchas, retaining a sliver of the original soul's identity. Those who succeed in shedding their masks entirely to become Arrancar leave this cycle behind, while those who remain are either consumed or serve as the foundation for Aizen's army, utilizing their Cero attacks in large-scale battles against Soul Reapers.
