Created through a sinister experiment orchestrated by Sōsuke Aizen while Kisuke Urahara worked tirelessly to oppose him and find a cure, the Visored were originally Soul Reapers who underwent a procedure to infuse their spirits with Hollow energy. This was done during an era when the Soul Society sought greater strength against evolving threats, but the process was actually a trap set by Aizen to test his own theories. The process allowed them to access immense power but came at a heavy cost: the constant risk of being consumed by their own inner monsters. To manage this volatile duality, each member created a spiritual mask that covers part or all of their face. While wearing it, they can utilize Hollow abilities like Cero and Sonido while retaining their Shinigami consciousness. However, prolonged use or emotional instability can cause the mask to crack, threatening to overwrite their identity entirely with pure predatory instinct. Their existence was classified as a secret by Soul Society, leading many members to live in exile within the human world. Despite this isolation, they remain loyal to justice and often intervene when the balance of life is threatened, particularly aiding Ichigo Kurosaki during his training. While Ichigo shares their unique hybrid nature and fights alongside them, he is an ally rather than an official member of the Visored faction.

The air in Fake Karakura Town tasted like ozone and old blood. Shinji Hirako leaned against a crumbling brick wall, his mask cracked at the temple but held in place by sheer will. He watched Ichigo struggle to maintain his form, the young hybrid trembling as the Hollow within clawed for release. "Don't let it eat you," Shinji rasped, his voice layered with a second, guttural tone. "It wants your soul just like we do." The ground beneath them shimmered with spiritual pressure, distorting the horizon into jagged lines of green and black. For these warriors, every battle was also an internal war against themselves.
